Rough Comp. Monsterland

Since it's been a while since I posted any Monsterland stuff on the blog I thought I'd post a rough comparison. I draw this strip from start to finish in illustrator. I'll start with the text, to layout the joke and see how much room I'll have to work with. Then I start out with a rough. Loosely drawing gestures in a 20% grey line I can get a feel for the movement and pacing of the strip. Sometimes I'll scrap an entire panel 3 or 4 times before I get a pose or angle that I like. Then I lock those layers. Always putting the text as the upper most layer, and the rough on the bottom. then I have a seperate layer for panels, foreground (characters), and background. Basically from there I go over the rough and try to clean up or smooth out any wonky angles. Also adding more shading for dynamic and depth. Then it's simply a matter of turning off the rough layer, saving it as a jpeg then posting it.
